How to Find Books You'll Actually Love

Forget the bestseller list for a moment. A better method starts with three books you already finished — and what they quietly have in common.

Most reading slumps are not a discipline problem. They are a matching problem: the book in your hand was chosen for you by a chart, a cover, or a sense of obligation, rather than by anything you actually enjoy.

Start with evidence you already have. Write down the last three books you finished willingly — not the ones you felt you should finish. Then look past genre at what they share: pace, length, point of view, how much interiority, how much plot, whether the ending resolved or unsettled.

That short list is a far better filter than any bestseller ranking. Use it on the catalogue here: filter by genre to narrow the field, then read the blurb and ask whether it matches your pattern rather than whether the book is important.

One more rule worth keeping: give a book fifty pages, then stop without guilt. Abandoning a book you are not enjoying is how you protect the time for one you will.
